Buckingham Palace - State Rooms
Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of Her Majesty The Queen and serves as both a home and an office.
Buckingham Palace was originally built in 1705 when it was called 'Buckingham House' and was the residence of The Duke of Buckingham. John Nash was then engaged to convert the House into a Palace by George IV, although the work was not completed until Queen Victoria started her reign in 1837 and the buildings name was changed to Buckingham Palace.
Each summer, for a couple of months, The State Rooms are opened to the public. The State Rooms at Buckingham Palace form the heart of the working palace and are lavishly furnished with some of the finest treasures from the Royal Collection. These rooms are used extensively by both The Queen and other Members of the Royal Family to receive and entertain guests on Formal State, Ceremonial and Official occasions.
Also on display in the 19 State Rooms open to the public are painting by Rubens, Poussin, Rembrandt and Canaletto; some of the finest English and French furniture in the world; and sculpture by Canova.
The Buckingham Palace State Rooms are normally open during August to September each year when The Queen makes her annual visit to Scotland.
A visit to Buckingham Palace also includes a walk through the Palace's 39-acre garden where The Queen's famous Garden Parties take place each year. It was also here, in 2002 to mark The Queen's Golden Jubilee, that the 'Party at the Palace' took place, notable for the spectacular opening with Brain May from the rock group QUEEN, playing the national anthem on the rook of Buckingham Palace!
