Meet Gareth Gates, star of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

London Breaks recently caught up with West End Star Gareth Gates, who is currently starring as Joseph at the Adelphi Theatre...

How are you enjoying your first stint in the West End?

It's fantastic, it is a big change from being in the studio. I am finally thinking about the lyrics of the songs and the underlying story, instead of turning up in the studio and just making it sound good. I have to really think about the story and I am really enjoying that challenge.

Why do you think Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat continues to be such a popular show?

I think because it is a musical where we seem to know every song before we watch it. It is great for all the family, adults and children seem to love it.

There have been a lot of famous Joseph's over the years- do you have a favourite?

Obviously people who are well known for the role like Jason Donovan and Phillip Schofield were both brilliant. However, I would have to say my favourite Joseph of all time is Donny Osmond.

Do you find performing in front of a theatre audience harder than doing a pop gig?

Yes I do because it is a lot more intimate and comes back to having to tell a whole story rather than just singing one song. Usually in an arena with thousands of people you can't see anything or anyone for the bright lights. The audience is much more present in the theatre and you have a responsibility to get a message across.

Now you're starring in Joseph do you see yourself becoming a West End regular?

Certainly for the next few years I would like to focus on a West End career and build up a portfolio of shows. I want to learn as much as possible about musical theatre as it is a great industry.

And finally - in a few words- what can you say that will entice our readers to come and see the show?

It is an amazing production, fun for all the family and great to sing along to.....and you get to laugh at me on stage in a loin cloth!

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat is currently playing in London's West End and is just one of the many shows that you can see.
